A touch of blarney
Athenree Homestead at Katikati was built by Irish settlers in 1879, and to celebrate this heritage the Athenree Homestead Trust is holding an Orange Day celebration on Sunday July 8. The event starts at noon and promises plenty of Irish fun. Tickets are $25 from the Katikati Information Centre.

Deco plus jazz
For a weekend of dancing, dining, dressing up, vintage cars and jazz, head to Napier for the Bluewater Hotel Deco Decanted & Jazz Festival, July 20-22. For the first time the festival combines the fun of the annual Art Deco celebration with the style and groove of a jazz festival.

View from the top
A crisp winter morning is a great time to wrap up warm and drift silently over Auckland in a hot air balloon, enjoying views of the city, islands, beaches and ranges. Balloon Safaris has a variety of balloons, with the largest carrying up to eight passengers. The company can arrange ballooning experiences to suit any occasion, and most flights end with bubbles and snacks.

Glacier country
If bad weather means you can't get on to Franz Josef Glacier, the new Hukawai Glacier Centre means that you can experience the next best thing. An indoor ice-climbing wall allows you to clamber over 200 sq m of ice that replicates natural conditions. If that's not your thing, you can take the Hukawai Interactive Walkthrough through rainforest and icy surrounds to the interior of a simulated glacier, complete with ice caves and crevasses.
