While away a cold winter’s day with a long, therapeutic soak in a hot pool. New Zealand has a great variety of hot springs, spas and pools ranging from luxurious private spas and relaxing adult-only pools to fun family-friendly aquatic parks and hidden natural springs. If you’d rather stay dry this winter, New Zealand also has plenty of thermal wonders to explore that make for a great winter adventure.
Hot Pools
Just over 40 minutes from Auckland, a great place for a day of family entertainment is Parakai Springs with its variety of heated pools and long, thrilling hydro-slides. There’s also the option of Waiwera Thermal Resort, 35 minutes north of Auckland, which has a range of waterslides and pools including a movie pool.
The Coromandel offers a range of hot pools to suit every taste. These include the mineral waters of Miranda Hot Springs, which will be a hit with the kids with plenty of room to play. The gorgeous lagoon-style pools of The Lost Spring in Whitianga are a great place to unwind and treat yourself.
In the Waikato region have a fun day out zooming down waterslides and enjoying the bumper boats at Waingaro Hot Springs, or relax in the soda spas of historic Te Aroha. 테 아로하의 미네랄 풀도 인기가 좋지요.
Tauranga is the place to go if you just can't get enough of salt water, even in the middle of winter. Nestled at the base of Mauao itself is the popular Mount Maunganui Hot Salt Water Pools, great for a mid-winter dip near the beach.
If you look closely around Rotorua or Taupo you'll find some amazing natural hot pools. These include Kerosene Creek near Rotorua, a small hot spring where you can enjoy flowing hot water, and Otumuheke Stream in Taupo, a hot stream that mingles with cool water as it reaches the Waikato River.
Then, of course, there is the ever-popular Polynesian Spa in Rotorua where you can soak in relaxing mineral water while looking out over tranquil Lake Rotorua, and Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs with its mineral pools, water playground and waterslide.
In Napier, the sea views from the open-air hot pools at Ocean Spa provide a welcome breath of fresh air for those forced indoors by the cold. For a natural experience, and if you don't mind working for your swim, drive 90 minutes from Napier to a car park known as 'The Gums'. Around a three and a half-hour walk will lead you to the Mangatainoka Hot Springs – a hidden gem with two small fibreglass baths filled by fresh hot water.
The South Island has more than its fair share of incredible pools set in gorgeous locations, often surrounded by snow in winter. As Hanmer Springs is known as a thermal spa town, it's no surprise that the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa is one of its main attractions. Here you can enjoy the natural thermal water, rock pools, pure air and surrounding mountains.
Tucked away on SH 7, 80km west of Hanmer Springs, is the thermal resort of Maruia Springs. Although not as well known as Hanmer Springs, Maruia’s hot water springs are just as therapeutic, and are situated in one of the most picturesque, albeit remote, places in the South Island.
If you're visiting the snowy surrounds of Lake Tekapo, you'll need warming up sooner or later. For beautiful hot pools in a natural setting with magnificent views of the surrounding landscape, Tekapo Springs is a great spot.
Over on the West Coast nestled in lush rainforest at Franz Josef are the Glacier Hot Pools, which are a fantastic setting for relaxing and appreciating the gorgeous surroundings.
With Queenstown being a favourite winter destination for many holidaymakers, there are many hot pools that warm you up while taking advantage of the spectacular surrounding scenery. Pools such as the Onsen Hot Pools, with a fusion of indoor and outdoor bathing, are great options.
For family-friendly water-based fun, head to Invercargill and check out Splash Palace where the indoor coastal theme will have you believing that it's still summer and you're at the beach, right down to the waves in the wave pool.
Thermal attractions
The central North Island is a geothermal hotspot where Mother Earth’s energy is on full display, and winter is a great time to appreciate the warmth and wonder of these unique attractions.
In Rotorua geysers shoot from the earth, scalding hot mud pools bubble away and colourful crater lakes adorn the landscape. Visit the thermal wonderlands of Waimangu, Te Puia, Wai-O-Tapu or Hell’s Gate to see geothermal activity in action, or the inner-city Kuirau Park where you can see mud pools and boiling lakes for free.
Orakei Korako, known as ‘the Hidden Valley’, is like an entirely different world. Just 25 minutes north of Taupo, this thermal area has geysers, silica terraces and caves to explore.
In Taupo, a visit to Craters of the Moon takes you on a geothermal walk around a series of geysers where bubbling mud pools and steaming vents will captivate you. You should also visit the Wairakei Terraces where you’ll find a man-made recreation of the original Pink and White Terraces that once existed in the area. You can also bathe in hot thermal pools here.
