Dozens queue for new and improved Apple gadget
It took three months of saving and an hour waiting in a queue but now gadget fan Ryan Carlyle has finally got the little white box he's been dreaming of.
The Welcome Bay 14-year-old was among dozens of people lined up at Western Bay stores as new gadget sensation iPad 2 went on sale at 5pm yesterday.
The Tauranga Boys' High School pupil has been hooked on gadgets, especially Apple accessories, since he bought his iPod Touch two years ago.
He admitted he was so anxious to get his hands on the iPad 2 that he went online at 3am yesterday just to check shipment times.
Not wanting to wait up to six weeks, he took his chances and asked mum Lynlee Carlyle to drive him to Tauranga's Technology Centre in hope they would have the exact model he was after - a shiny 32GB 3G black iPad 2.
"I would have been pretty gutted if I didn't get it," he said. "There's nothing that competes with it really. It's ahead of its time."
Ryan saved all of the $1150 he needed by selling worm farms at $15 a punnet on Trade Me and photographing homes for his mother's real estate agency.
He planned to spend the weekend loading applications on to his new toy and reckoned it would be "a couple of days at least" until his mum got a turn.
Welcome Bay sales and marketing manager Simon Oldham also got his iPad 2 before the store sold out, just hours after getting approval from his boss to buy one.
Mr Oldham planned to use his iPad 2 for presentations to clients: "It just makes good sense to have one and it's far better than having a laptop."
Te Akau Ki Papamoa teacher Glen Storey would be using the maths and reading comprehension applications on his $870 entry level iPad in his tech-savvy classroom - "but I'll be using it myself more than with the kids".
The Technology Centre received 50 phone calls about the iPad yesterday and staff expected demand would keep up for a long time to come.
Noel Leeming Tauranga, where people began queuing at 3.30pm, reported it was "very busy" from the 5pm launch and sold out of stock shortly after.
WHAT'S SO SPECIAL:
The iPad 2 features a new design that is 33 per cent thinner and up to 15 per cent lighter than the original iPad, while maintaining the same 9.7-inch LED-backlit LCD screen.
It also features Apple's new dual-core A5 processor for fast performance and graphics, and now includes two cameras, a front-facing VGA camera for FaceTime and Photo Booth, and a rear-facing camera that captures 720p HD video, bringing the innovative FaceTime feature to iPad users for the first time.
Though it is thinner, lighter, faster and packed with new features, iPad 2 still delivers up to 10 hours of battery life that iPad users have come to expect.
