Beach bans lifted as BOP claims back shore

Bay of Plenty residents can reclaim their picturesque shoreline from Wednesday as maritime authorities announce beach bans will be lifted.

However, two small sections at Papamoa and Maketu Spit will remain restricted as the last persistent remains of oil and debris from the Rena are cleaned up.

The move is more good news for Tauranga locals celebrating the end of a successful six-week mission to clear the stricken ship of heavy fuel oil held in its tanks.

The grounding off Tauranga's coast on October 5 has been branded New Zealand's worst maritime environmental disaster.

About 350 tonnes of oil seeped into the ocean, killing birds and oiling beaches, but the salvage operation has spared the coast from any further large-scale spills.

Despite the progress, Maritime New Zealand's on scene commander Mick Courtnell warned it was not necessarily business as usual for those returning to the beaches.

"The beaches are not the same as they were before Rena grounded," Mr Courtnell said.

"There are small amounts of oil buried in the sand, on some of the rocks and in some cases submerged in the water."

Some beaches, especially the busiest like Pilot Bay, Mount Main Beach and Papamoa East, would be regularly cleaned up in sections to keep them safe.

Health officials have advised that oily sand presented just a "minor health risk". However, authorities are warning parents to take extra care to ensure their kids don't swallow it.

A rahui prohibiting the collection of seafood from the affected coast also remains in place.

Beach access restrictions have been lifted for all beaches from Mount Maunganui to Maketu Estuary, excluding Maketu Spit and the area around the Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Club. Bay of Plenty Times >
