(Farm open Day)

Robin-Hugh 2011. 3. 18. 04:33

Townies craving a bit of the country life will have a chance to get their hands dirty this weekend.

Federated Farmers has invited families to visit the McLeod Farm on Sunday to see the animals, the characters and the way of life that makes up the farming industry.

"This is a great chance for townies to come get some hands-on time in the paddock and reconnect with the rural community," John Scrimgeour, Federated Farmers Bay of Plenty president, said. "It's a great opportunity for children and their families to spend a day interacting with farm animals. The McLeod Farm itself is a family operation, with Noel and Marilyn McLeod equity partners with their son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Robyn McLeod who run the farm day to day."

Mr Scrimgeour said it would be a fun day for families and it's free. There will be interactive activities for the children, such as shearing and sheep dog demonstrations and also tractor and pony rides.

"As well as the fun elements for the kids, we will also be having a few talks on the tour about sustainable farming from experts, working to dispel some of the myths surrounding farming."

Gumboot throwing competitions and a "find the lolly in the haystack" games will keep the young and the young at heart entertained.

There will also be a sausage sizzle to help fundraise for the local school.

"The real goal of Farm Day is to get families who haven't visited a farm in a while to come have a laugh with us in the paddock. They might even learn something. We want to turn kids on to the whole farming process, from pasture to plate," Mr Scrimgeour said.
