100 Essential Picture Books
for Primary Schools
Selected by Joan Gibbons, Deputy Librarian: Education Library, University of Waikato. August 2000.
In 1999 I was faced with the pleasant task of selecting a basic picture book collection for the teaching needs of students at Tauranga University College. I decided to make a list of one hundred pictures books that are essential to any primary school collection, and to use these as the basis for a collection in the new library.
Every good primary school library should have most of these books, and perhaps every good home where there are children should have most of them too. Almost all of the books are available in paperback editions, although libraries should consider buying them in hardback, because they are books whose quality will outlast wear and tear.
I created certain criteria for this list: * Only one book by each author is named, although many of these authors have written other equally good books that you might prefer to use to replace or supplement those on the list. * The books have lasting value. * Books by New Zealand authors are well represented; more so than you would find on an international list of one hundred best books, because I think New Zealand children should be introduced to books by New Zealand authors. I have *starred the New Zealand authors so that they are easily identified, and so that people whose national allegiance is different might know where to substitute their own favourites. * The books could be used at a variety of levels throughout primary and intermediate education, from year 0 to year 8 (5-13 years of age), and some of these books are more suitable for use with older children. Because it is a list for using in primary schools, it needs an early childhood supplement to adequately cover the needs of the youngest children. * Books that may be useful in more than one curriculum area have priority over books that serve only one purpose. (They are better value for money in school libraries.) * They should be in print, or come back into print from time to time. The fact that many of the books have been medal winners contributes to their continued availability, although this was not in itself a criterion. International on-line bookselling has also contributed to the availability of overseas titles. * They should together be a good, representative collection of picture books.
All of these books are useful in the English curriculum area. Many of them are particularly useful when working on the visual literacy component of the new curriculum. A number of the books are in rhyme, which is helpful in developing phonemic awareness, as well as making the book easier for an adult to read aloud and easier for a child with developing reading skills to tackle by themselves. All provide language models of various kinds (i.e. they are well written).
Several librarians from the University of Waikato made suggestions of other books to be included in such a list, but nearly all suggestions were for other books by authors already included on the list. I have stuck by my favourites. The list was distributed early this year to students doing on-line courses, and I have received suggestions from some of them. A second list is underway, for those who would like 200 picture books instead of 100.
I am often asked which is the best. It has to be Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak, a book which shaped the way picture books in the second half of the twentieth century were to be. My own children's favourite is not even on the list, because another book by the same author took its place. It's Calico the Wonder Horse, or, The Saga of Stewy Stinker by Virginia Lee Burton, published by Faber in 1942. The grandparent of them all is The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter (Warne, 1902). Good reading! * Denotes New Zealand Books (see explanation above.)
