블랙프라이데이? 뉴질랜드와 호주엔 복싱데이(Boxing Day)가 있다

뉴질랜드 타우랑가에서 자녀들과 함께 조기유학 중인 우리 가족회원님들, 

벌써 크리스마스 선물과 감사 카드 준비하고 계신가요?

보통 학교가 방학할 때 (보통 12월 16일 -18일) 담임선생님이나 또는 친하게 지내시는 이웃들에게 줄 작은 선물이라고 한가지씩 준비를 하면 좋을 듯합니다. 특히 선생님들한테는 아이들이 직접 쓴 감사카드가 제일 좋을 듯합니다.  

그 아이들은  크리스마스보다 싼타 할아버지의 선물을 더 기다리고 있겠지만요. 

크리스마스가 다가오니 도대체 박싱데이(Boxing Day)가 뭐지요? 

궁금해하시는 분들이 많습니다.   그 날에는 뉴질랜드 모든 상점들이 파격적인 가격 할인을 한다고들 하고, 

그날에 쇼핑하기 위해 돈을 모으는 분들도 계시다고 합니다.  

한국시간으로  11월29일 (미국에서는 11월28일) 에 블랙 프라이데이 시작이라고 해서 요즘 한국에서는 난리가 난 모양입니다. 해외 인터넷 쇼핑몰을 통해 할인된 상품을 구입하기 위한 온갖 방법과 어디서 얼마나 파격적인 세일을 하는가 인터넷에 온갖 정보가 넘치네요. 

미국에서는  추수감사절(Thanksgiving Day. 11월 네번째 목요일)이 지나고 난 뒤 금요일에 블랙 프라이데이가 있다면 

연연방 국가들인  뉴질랜드, 호주 등에는 Boxing Day 가 있습니다. 

영국의 전통이 아직도 강하게 살아있는 나라들이니까요. 

뉴질랜드의 박싱데이는 게다가 공휴일입니다. 

12월24일 크리스마스 이브도 휴일이지요. 

12월 25일 크리스마스도 당연히 공휴일 (이 날에는  모든 상점이 문을 닫습니다. 주유소와 편의점 등만 빼고요),

그리고 나서 12월 26일이 바로  박싱데이(Boxing Day)  공휴일입니다. 

2014년 올해 복싱데이는 금요일입니다.   그리고 토요일, 일요일까지에도 쉬지요.  

직장인들의 황금 연휴가 시작되는데,, 보통  23일 크리스마스 이브부터 신년연휴까지 푸욱 쉬면서  

2015년 1월 4일(일)까지  약 2주간의  길고 긴  여름 바캉스 시즌을 즐기게 됩니다. 

크리스마스 지나고 나서 가족들끼지 - 외국에서 뿔뿔이 헤어져 살던 가족들이 모처럼 다 모여서 (한국의 추석날 처럼요)- 

크리스마스를 함께 보내고요.  이날은 야외로, 여름해변으로 나가서 휴일을 즐기는 의미로 발전되고 있지요. 

최근의  복싱데이(Boxing Day)는  전날 크리스마스에 일제히 문을 닫았던 상점들이 다시 문을 열고 대대적인 할인판매를 하는 날입니다..  50% 이상의 세일도 많습니다 . 그렇게 파격 할인 쇼핑도 가능하니까 큰 가전제품,가구 등을 사려는 뉴질랜드인들은 이날을 손꼽아 기다리면서 한해를 보냅니다.  (물론 대부분의 제품에  무이자 할부까지도 덤으로요)   

가족들이 다함께 구경하실만한 대규모 스포츠 행사도 복싱데이에 많이 열린답니다.   

전통적인 의미에서는 박싱데이(Boxing Day)는  옛날 영국에서 고용주가 직원들에게  현금 보너스나  팔다남은 제품, 음식 등을 박스에 담아  선물로 담아 주던 관습에서 유래했다는 설. 

영주가 소작인들에게  크리스마스가 지난 뒤 농기구나 씨앗 등을 박스에 담아 선물을 하던 관습에서 유래했다거나, 

또는 교회 앞에 커다른 철제 박스를 놓아 불쌍하고 가난한 사람들에게 나눠줄 선물을 모았다는 것에서 유래되었다고 합니다.   어디서 유래가 됐든,  크리스마스의 사랑과 나눔을 실천하는 날이 바로 박싱데이의 유래랍니다. 

 저는 올해도 고민합니다.  

아이폰6 플러스, 대형 TV, 아이들은 데스크톱 컴퓨터,  최고급 카메라와 렌즈 등등 

참, 타우랑가에서 제일 오래된 클래식 승합차를 바꿔보라는 분들이 요즘 부쩍 많으시지만 

지금 제가 타고 다니는 8인승 승합차는요, 늙긴 했지만 가장 믿을만하고 고장한번 나지 않는 탱크랍니다.    

드디어 태양은 한여름처럼 강렬하게 뜨거워졌습니다. 

화상 조심하시고요. 야외에 가실 땐 반드시 모자, 썬크림부터 잘 챙겨주세요.

Boxing Day is a statutory public holiday in New Zealand, so schools, government offices, and many private businesses are closed. New Year’s Day is also in the middle of the school summer holidays in New Zealand.

Background

Boxing Day is a holiday in many countries in the Commonwealth of Nations, including New Zealand. It was traditionally a day for employers in England to give bonuses of money, leftover food or old clothing to their employees, or for lords to give agricultural tools and seeds for the coming year to their tenants. These gifts were presented in a box. Some people believe that this is the reason that December 26 is known as Boxing Day. Others think that the origin of the name is related to the box into which parishioners put church donations. In some areas, this box was opened on Boxing Day and the contents were distributed to the poor people of the parish

 

Shopping 

In the UK,[21] Canada,[22] and some states of Australia,[23] Boxing Day is primarily known as a shopping holiday, much like Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) in the US. 

 

Boxing Day sales are common in Canada. It is a time where shops have sales, often with dramatic price reductions. For many merchants, Boxing Day has become the day of the year with the greatest amount of returns. In the UK in 2009 it was estimated that up to 12 million shoppers appeared at the sales (a rise of almost 20% compared to 2008, although this was also affected by the fact that the VAT would revert to 17.5% from 1 January, following the temporary reduction to 15%).[24]

Many retailers open very early (typically 5 am or even earlier) and offer doorbuster deals and loss leaders to draw people to their stores. It is not uncommon for long queues to form early in the morning of 26 December, hours before the opening of shops holding the big sales, especially at big-box consumer electronics retailers.[22] Many stores have a limited quantity of big draw or deeply discounted items.[25] Because of the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, many choose to stay home and avoid the hectic shopping experience. The local media often cover the event, mentioning how early the shoppers began queueing up, providing video of shoppers queueing and later leaving with their purchased items.[26] Many retailers have implemented practices aimed at managing large numbers of shoppers. They may limit entrances, restrict the number of patrons in a store at a time, provide tickets to people at the head of the queue to guarantee them a hot ticket item or canvass queued-up shoppers to inform them of inventory limitations.[25]

In recent years, retailers have expanded deals to "Boxing Week". While Boxing Day is 26 December, many retailers will run the sales for several days before or after 26 December, often up to New Year's Eve. Notably, in the recession of late 2008, a record number of retailers were holding early promotions due to a weak economy.[27] Canada's Boxing Day has often been compared with the American Super Saturday, the Saturday before Christmas.

In some areas of Canada, particularly in Atlantic Canada and parts of Northern ontario (including Sault Ste. Marie[28] and Sudbury), most retailers are prohibited from opening on Boxing Day, either by provincial law or municipal bylaw, or instead by informal agreement among major retailers to provide a day of relaxation following Christmas Day. In these areas, sales otherwise scheduled for 26 December are moved to the 27th.[29][30]

In the Republic of Ireland, since 1902, most shops remain closed on St. Stephen's Day. In 2009, some shops opened on this day, breaking a 107-year-old tradition.

In 2009, many retailers with both online and High Street stores launched their online sales on Christmas Eve and their High Street sales on Boxing Day.[31][32]
