뉴질랜드를 알자 - 곤충의 공룡인 웨타(weta)와 샌드 플라이(sand fly)

영화 '반지의 제왕'시리즈, 킹콩 그리고 최근에 상영중인 '호빗(The Hobbit)' 등 뉴질랜드  대표 감독인 피터 잭슨, 

그리고 그의 세계 최고의 특수효과 스튜디오  Weta Digital (수도 웰링턴에 소재.  그곳에 Weta Cave 박물관도 있습니다)

그래서 우리에게 잘 알려지지 않은 Weta라는 곤충에 대해서, 그리고 한국 분들에겐 참 낯선 sand Fly라는 것을 

 지난번 타우랑가 도서관에 아이들과 갔을 때 찾아봤었죠. 

 

 

 

 

Weta (웨타) : 전세계 곤충 중에서 가장 크다고 해서 곤충 중의 공룡이라고 불린답니다.  

뉴질랜드가 바로 유일한 서식지. 

메뚜기와 귀뚜라미를 합쳐 놓은 듯한 모습이고 날개가 없기 때문에 날지 못합니다. 

다리 6개와 더듬이 2개.  새들이 워낙 좋아하는 먹이라 방어능력이 없답니다.  

제일 큰 놈은 푸어 나이트(Poor Knight)섬의 자이언트 웨타(Giant weta)라는 녀석인데 몸통길이 10cm, 몸 전체길이 20cm, 

몸무게가 큰 것은 70g이고 기록상으로 150g 짜리도 있답니다.

Wetapunga: God of Ugly Things

The Little Barrier Island giant weta or Wetapunga is the biggest weta of them all and weighs up to 71 grams. That’s three times heavier than a mouse! The name Wetapunga means god of ugly things but hasn’t stopped rats and other predators almost wiping it out! It is now only found on Little Barrier Island.
 

Quick Facts

• The weta is only found in New Zealand and is so old it has outlived the dinosaurs.

• Weta are large by insect standards. Some of the giant weta are enormous and are amongst the heaviest insects in the world 

• The weta is sometimes called the dinosaur of the insect world 

• The weta is more primitive than the tuatara. The weta has changed very little in the past 100 million years.

• Weta have their ears on their front knees and can feel the vibrations of noises around them.

• You can tell a male and female weta apart because females have a long ovipositor, which looks a bit like a stinger, which they use to lay eggs.

 

그리고  한국 분들에겐 낯설은 샌드 플라이 (Sand Fly)입니다. 

하루살이 정도의 크기인데 한번 물리면

따끔하게 물리는 느낌도 싫고요.   모기에 물린 것보다 더 가렵기도 하거니와 물린 부위가 부어오르기도 합니다. 

 슈퍼마켓에서 파는 해충방지제 (off,  또는 aeroguard  등) 를 다리 부위 등에 뿌려주면 잘 물리지 않습니다. 

물이 있는 늪지, 산속의 호수 근처 , 바닷가 등지에서도 많습니다. 

어린 아이들 데리고 야외 공원, 놀이터로 다닐 때는 꼭 해충 방지제 off를 꼭 뿌리고 다니세요.  

만약 물렸을 때는 (가렵고 부어오르고)...   

물파스, 버물리 별로 소용이 없고요, 약국에서 샌드플라이 전용 약을 찾으시든지, 또는  

설탕물을  바르면 붓기도 가라앉고, 가려운 것도 많이 가신다고 하네요.  

긁지 말라고 하는데 간지러워서 안긁을 수가 없어요. 

퀸스타운 밀포드 사운드의 샌드 플라이는 전세계 관광객들에게 가장 유명한 해충이 될 듯합니다.
