다음은 지난 Term3 동안 Barabar 선생님과 함께 영어 스피치 수업을 열심히 들었던 Kate 성적표입니다... Well done ! Kate!!

KATE

Kate is a very bright girl who learns quickly and follows direction well. Using prose, guided dialogue, poetry, vocabulary games, and public speaking, we have focussed on achieving a stronger oral projection (a louder, more confident voice). This is very important in public speaking if the speaker wants his audience to be interested and involved. It also makes the speaker appear more confident. Korean children have softer voices than New Zealand children who can be very loud! Kate will benefit from working towards a stronger oral projection to achieve more confidence in presentation, as she has very good ideas.

Pronunciation is also vitally important for speech to be intelligent and interesting as opposed to ‘learnt’. I have put much emphasis on correct pronunciation. The main issues have been the TH sound where the tongue must be out between the teeth, and V where the teeth gently bite the bottom lip. Kate has no difficulty with R and L sounds which are normally problematic for students of English as a second language.

The most common mistake in grammar has been the absence of words termed “articles”,

(the, a, an) in front of nouns or naming words. This is a mistake many people make and is the basis of correct grammar in speech. (Example I sit on the chair. I eat an apple). Kate and Isabella have invented a little song to remember this rule!

We have studied the techniques of writing and presenting a speech, and Kate is appreciating the use of emphasis and correct pause to help give her voice intonation, as opposed to a monotone. She has told me that she would like to be a translator when she is older. I think Kate has great potential for a career such as this as she is intelligent with a very likeable personality. She has been a pleasure to teach.       < Barbara Gray 선생님>
